Hintz Family Alumni Center History
The Hintz Family Alumni Center is named for 1959 graduate Edward R. Hintz Jr. and his family. Hintz was chair of Penn State’s Board of Trustees from 2001–2003 and he chaired Penn State’s Grand Destiny Campaign. He was recognized with the Alumni Fellow Award in 1982 and the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1987.
The stone house portion of the center, closest to The Mall, is the oldest building on campus. Previously known as University House, it served as the residence of Penn State presidents from 1864 to 1970. Thomas G. Purdy ’83 and Linda O’Gwynn ’76 of Philadelphia designed the award–winning wing added behind the house. The Hintz Family Alumni Center was dedicated in 2001. The Alumni Gardens and Alumni Walk were dedicated in 2006 and 2008.
