Statement: As a member of the advisory board of Penn State Greater Allegheny, I’m privileged to watch students receive the outstanding Penn State education that benefits me to this day. I’m proud that Penn State offers our students even greater opportunities than I had. I’ve become acutely aware, though, of the financial challenges that tuition and costs pose for our students and their families and the difficult job market confronting today’s graduates.

I am a candidate for Alumni Council because I want to find new ways for us to help students address those challenges, relying on two “pillars” of our vision statement: harnessing the power of the Penn State network and supporting and enhancing the student experience.

Several years ago, my wife and I funded a trustee scholarship, and we’ve received many heart-warming notes of thanks from the recipients. I would like the Alumni Association to play an even greater role in encouraging our members’ support for scholarships. Not all alumni can be major donors, but we can identify and communicate the many avenues where even small contributions can help, and the personal reward from doing so. I also would like to see increased communication to alumni about mentoring and informal career counseling. With 176,000 members worldwide, a student or recent graduate should always be able to speak to one of us for career advice.

I am fully committed to Penn State and to supporting and enhancing the experience of the students of today and tomorrow.

For the Glory!
